Update

So its been a really long time since Ive posted anything on here! Due to the holidays and Charlie and school and of course Logan Ive not had much time on my hands.....

UPDATES:

Holidays: The Holidays went great Logan got a bunch of new toys and stuff that he enjoyed.
Charlie: Im very sad to say that Charlie did not make it.. she passed a few weeks before the holidays commenced. That baby fought well and I hate she had to go through what she did..
School: Well thats a personal thing.
Logan: Logan has gotten a break from training since the holidays but is learning behavior training now and he is doing very good!

Thanks guys for bearing with me even though not many people read this!

Fighting for Charlie!

Charlie is our new trainee for Diabetic alert service dog training. She recently contracted parvo. Well she seems to be (knock on wood) getting a little better. So please hope and pray she gets better!! I will keep you updated as soon as I get the chance to.

Logan is being kept away and has had his max dose of shots so his immunity is A+

GREAT NEWS

Logan will be continuing his diabetic service dog training by learning how to act in public as far as wringing out any aggression and opposition to me and to the new scents and sights.

If you want to qualify your dog as a service dog visit www.ada.gov and print out forms FAQ and Business regulations so you have less problems and questions about your service dog at business's. You DO NOT have to have ANY type of ID or paper saying your dog is a service dog!! But however it is Illegal to print out these papers for your PET and say its a service dog in order just to take your Pet with you everywhere. Jail and heavy fines will be your punishment.

What a wonderful day!

Today's scent training with Logan was amazing!!! He caught the scent like a pro today! He also did very well on leash training and retrieving which he always does well retrieving he is a Lab. If your interested in learning how I obtained my own scent samples contact me via blog and I will fill you in!!

Scent training!!

Logan caught his first scent today!!! I used blood from a 260 number that I had the night before for him to smell. I held the scent in my hand balled into a fist and wanted to see if Logan would be able to tell which hand it was in and he did. This is the beginning of the rest of Logan's life. Keep stopping by for updates!

Scent training soon to begin!!!

So as my research for Logan continues on his training I've decided to begin his scent training as his first actual diabetic related experience. However, being an amateur I still need to obtain my samples......and find a way to do that!

Thanksgiving and your Dog

This post not only goes out to service dog owners everywhere but to any pet owner! Okay lets all be very Thankful for our dogs they make us smile, make our doctors up our blood pressure medication, and keeps us from loneliness with their presence.

Yes, lets include our pets in Thanksgiving no lets not give them their own seat at the table and free run with our turkey but lets include "Logan" in our family meal, because after all he is family!!

Some safe Thanksgiving leftovers to give your pup or cat as follows:

  • Turkey meat- the white meat with NO skin whatsoever because it is very hard for your dog to digest.
  • Plain mash potatoes, cooked carrots, dressing without gravy, and maybe a small biscuit. Avoid spices and gravies.
  • If your dog only eats "dog food" dont stress his delicate balance, instead add a little bit of turkey or veggies to his kibble, and safe some veggies as treats to give throughout the evening.
  • Does your pooch sit up under the table staring up at you and your guest with wide eyes? Well place a few "treat cups" around the table to give to your pet after you eat filled with all the goodies!!
  • Dessert? YES!! A few apple slices with a scoop of mash potatoes, or pumpkin (not the kind in  a can).
You pet doesnt have to miss out and be locked in your bedroom to feast on your pillows! He can share in the family Thanks too! Keeping your pet and mine in mind!

Listen to me!!!

So its easy to figure out that sometimes your dog just doesn't want to listen to you and wants to go his or her on way. My tips for this week are as follows:

  • Be patient. Stop after your pet gets the command the first time then go play his/her favorite game.
  • Do not try to train your dog around other animals. Start off first in an isolated place just you and your dog until he has mastered the command and then allow him to train in other areas with kids and other animals.
Just take a deep breath and relax. Your Diabetic Alert Dog is an animal not capable of a human comprehension. Even if your dog has the components of what makes a great service dog it takes years and years and forever of constant training. EVERYDAY, EVERY HOUR, EVERY SECOND IT ALL COUNTS!
